Rescue:
Pet Patrol volunteers were alerted to a property where a growing colony of cats was struggling to
survive. Two neighbouring rental properties had become overrun with old vehicles, which created
endless hiding places for cats but provided very little safety. By the time help arrived, there were
approximately five adult cats and fifteen kittens between the two properties. Some of the kittens
had taken shelter inside a neglected shed, the condition inside of which was heartbreaking: clutter,
deceased animals, unknown chemicals, and debris scattered throughout. Several of the kittens
arrived completely unfamiliar with human kindness, and two were suffering from severe eye
infections. Shizen’s eye was too badly damaged to save and had to be surgically removed.
Although they were understandably terrified when they first came into care, patience, gentle
handling, and plenty of love helped these resilient kittens discover that people could be wonderful.
Personality:
Shiro, fondly known as “Shiro the Hero,” has come such a long way from the frightened little kitten
he once was. After everything he had been through, Shiro spent his first month hiding, too nervous
to meow or even accept a gentle pet. With weeks of daily kitty massages, patient socialization, and
plenty of love, this handsome boy has slowly discovered that he is safe—and his confidence has
blossomed. He has even experienced fullblown kitten zoomies for the first time! Shiro now happily
plays with toys, tumbles with the other cats, and eagerly explores his surroundings, with his fuzzy
tarantula toy being an absolute favourite. He gets along wonderfully with other cats and even the
resident dog, and having a friendly animal companion helps him continue to thrive. Shiro would do
beautifully in a home with other pets or adopted alongside one of his siblings, where he can keep
growing into the carefree, confident boy he was always meant to be. Shiro is ready to be adopted
into his forever home—one that will welcome him into the family and keep him safely indoors.
