Rescue:

Not far from the Pet Patrol sanctuary there is a small town where one of our volunteers
lives. It’s not much more than a street out in the country, a small bridge over the river and at
one end a farm. The owners of the property live in the traditional way, make their living
through farming, travel by horse and buggy and have livestock in their barn. They also have
a lot of cats. Having them spayed or neutered, to control the overpopulation is not part of
their lifestyle. Their mother is Duchess and she had been there for about a year and had
produced a litter of kittens in July. Only her two boys Duke and Dane survived. The cats
were fed sparingly, Barn Cat Buffet, which is a cheap cat food that you can get at the local
farmers co-op. A neighbour seeing the plight of the cats set up a feeding station to attract
the cats onto his property, and from there he tries to find homes for them. Some are
adopted into family homes through him and some come into Pet Patrol care.

Personality:

Duke and Dane are a formidable pair. They look similar but their different personalities
happily complement each other. Dane is an adventurous cat, liking to investigate things,
follows you around the house and will rub up against you for extra scratches behind the
ears. He is fascinated by running water and recently discovered beds and being tucked in
under the blanket. He cuddles with his brother alot. Duke is shy but extremely playful and
cuddly. Wave a string in his direction and the fun begins even doing a backflip to grab the
toy. He is also a purring machine, settling on your lap to look at you with adoring eyes. He
is learning how to be comfortable around humans, doesn’t like loud noises and sometimes
he will tunnel under the blanket to nap. He chirps when he detects a presence in the room.
The pair spend a lot of time playfully wrestling or running after each other during the evenings.
It is preferable that Duke and Dane are adopted together into their forever home.
One that will welcome them into the family and keep them safely indoors.
