There is a property that is known for having horses, a large barn and many many cats. Because the owners had not been looking after them (feeding them properly and having the cats spayed/neutered), the numbers increased every year. The cats were now migrating to the neighbours who started feeding them because they looked so malnourished and miserable. Their life was of dirt, feces, wet and cold weather and no one caring about them. Many of the female cats would leave the stable to have their kittens in a chicken coop on a neighbouring property. It was safe and insulated, no chickens any more but there were nice nesting boxes for them to have their litters. The woman who owned the coop lived a good distance from the horse farm, and marveled at how far the cats would go for food and safety. Eventually the property was going to be sold and the cats were in dire need of being rescued. Unfortunately most were feral, but some like Riley showed promise of being socialized.

Riley didn’t trust anyone when he arrived at Pet Patrol and rightly so. People had not been very good to him and he needed some time to trust them. We are now able to pet him and comfort him and he is accepting new people approaching him too. He needs some time yet to fully show his personality, but what he has demonstrated is a playful and happy go lucky cat. He is happy in the sanctuary and good with the other cats that we have there. After all, all he has ever known is a colony. He likes to play chase with the other cats, and curl up in his cubby watching everything that is going on. He is not shy in that way. Riley is ready to be adopted into his forever home. One that will welcome him into the family and keep him safely indoors.
