Rescue
Onyx’ mother was first spotted wiggling her behind as she was trying desperately to get under a shed. She needed shelter, not only from the weather which was hot and extremely humid, but also from other animals that viewed her as prey. She was quite pregnant at that time as well, and the food available was not enough for an expectant cat. One of Pet Patrol’s volunteers regularly goes out to this site, which is adjacent to a local market and furniture store. People tend to think that it is ok to dump their cats there, they will be fed and they can sleep in the barn. But there is only so much food and the other cats residing there do not want to share. This momma (who we named Okalani) knew that she needed to stay close to the food, as little as there was, hide from the aggressors and keep the shelter for her soon to be born kittens. That day did come, and the babies were safe under the shed until they were about six weeks old. Then a small tornado hit the area and all three sheds were completely destroyed. Okalani’s sanctuary was gone. Every day she moved her five kittens (Onyx being one of them), dragging them down railway tracks, going into buildings that closed up at night and left her out, trying to keep count of them as they followed her though long grass and across roads. Our volunteer could not bear it any longer and rescued the entire feline family.

Personality
Onyx and his siblings were pretty frightened when they first arrived at Pet Patrol, but within a few days they were purring and playing, exploring and allowing our volunteers to cradle them like babies. Onyx is a wonderful little kitten who is very affectionate once he is in your arms, and loves his belly rubbed. He has a super loud purr when he is getting affection. He loves to play with anything he can pounce on. It can make crinkle noises, roll or have a bell attached, as long as he can make it move…he is on it! This little fella is ready to be adopted into a loving forever home. One that will welcome him into the family and keep him safely indoors.
